A photo of the first Miss America winner, Margaret Gorman. This was the official photo of her as the winner.

The Miss America Pageant originates from the 1920’s.  It was referred to as the “Bathing Beauty Review”. It focused on women’s physical appearance in the beginning and for many years thereafter.  Women started focusing on their personal physical beauty during the Twenties. With magazines such as Ladies Home Journal giving women advice on their appearance and the items they could purchase to enhance their beauty, the Miss America Pageant was a natural extension of what was popular in society at that time.  Today, however, the Miss America Pageant focuses on talent performances and interviews, not on beauty due to overwhelming pressures from society.

 The Poll:

Is it still politically correct to have the Miss America Pageant?

  Yes or No?

The women’s suffrage movement started long before women were given the right to vote.  Women such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott would not live to see their movement lead to a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote.  It took women serving in all capacities during World War I to get the public to see that women were equal to men and they deserve the right to vote. Finally, in 1920, the 19th amendment becomes law.  Why did it take so long? Did it truly lead to equality between men and women? Are men and women considered equals today?

Poll:

Was suffrage and the 19th amendment important for women in the 1920’s?

  1. Yes, it was very important for women in the 1920’s and had a big impact on how women were treated then and today
  2. No, it was not very important for women in the 1920’s and did not have any impact on women or on how women were viewed then or today

Hidden Figures in the 1920’s:

In the 1920’s women became more involved with science. Florence Rena Sabin was the first woman elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Women were being accepted into the science field and were able to work jobs that were originally dominated by men. Although women were still not being noticed in the science field, it opened doors for women to progressively get more known for their attributes to science.  As of today, women are still trying to be “equal” to men in the field of science.

Poll:

Should have these women gotten credit for their work in science?

  1. Yes, they should have gotten credit
  2. No, they do not deserve any credit
