Lights, Camera, Action

The Miss America Pageant originates from the 1920’s.  It was referred to as the “Bathing Beauty Review”. It focused on women’s physical appearance in the beginning and for many years thereafter.  Women started focusing on their personal physical beauty during the Twenties. With magazines such as Ladies Home Journal giving women advice on their appearance and the items they could purchase to enhance their beauty, the Miss America Pageant was a natural extension of what was popular in society at that time.  Today, however, the Miss America Pageant focuses on talent performances and interviews, not on beauty due to overwhelming pressures from society.
